We Know the Path Because We’ve Walked It

The FASD Mentors of Change program is created and run by individuals with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD), with 96% of the staff also on the spectrum. It was developed by people who wanted to ensure their voices were heard and their experiences valued, providing a space where they can take the lead in shaping their own support systems. The program features a buddy system that encourages advocacy, collaboration, and the creation of workshops and initiatives. Together, participants build a community rooted in respect, understanding, and inclusion, empowering individuals with FASD to take pride in their accomplishments and take charge of their future.

Mission

We encourage and support those with lived and living experience of FASD and their families to take a central role in their own lives. Using the ‘nothing about us without us’ approach, we recognize them as experts in their own experiences and promote respect, dignity, and inclusion.

Vision

We envision a world where those with lived and living experience of FASD and their families are supported, encouraged, and treated with respect and dignity. Through education, teaching, and raising awareness, we foster stronger communities and greater understanding.

The Looking After Each Other – FASD Language Guide was created to help people use respectful, accurate, and inclusive language when talking about Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD). Its main purpose is to reduce stigma, promote dignity, and change the way people speak with and about individuals with FASD.

It gives suggestions for better word choices—moving away from harmful or outdated terms, and focusing instead on person-first, strength-based language. The guide is meant for anyone: families, service providers, educators, policy makers, and the public. It’s all about encouraging communication that supports understanding, inclusion, and respect for people with lived and living experience of FASD.
